A New Beginning: R-Day 2002

The summer sun was already high in the sky as Cadet David Brennan stepped out of the car and onto the grounds of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. It was July 1, 2002—Induction Day. Around him, dozens of other nervous and excited young men and women were saying their goodbyes to family and friends, each one about to embark on a transformative journey.

David’s heart raced as he took in his surroundings. The stately buildings, the meticulously maintained lawns, and the imposing statue of Alexander Hamilton all seemed to echo with the weight of history and tradition. He took a deep breath, squared his shoulders, and made his way to the check-in area.

“Welcome to the Coast Guard Academy,” a smiling upperclassman greeted him. “Name and documents, please.”

David handed over his paperwork, his hands slightly shaking. The upperclassman glanced at the documents, then looked up with an encouraging nod. “You’re all set. Follow the blue line to get your gear and room assignment.”

As David followed the painted line on the pavement, he couldn’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and anxiety. He had dreamed of this moment for years, but now that it was here, the reality of leaving behind the familiar and stepping into the unknown was overwhelming.
